Perception Is Reality...

Most of us have heard the saying “Perception is reality” but do we REALLY know what that means? Locked in these three words is the secret to changing every circumstance in your life and the power to never be sad or hurt again. It’s very simple…if you change your perception you change your reality. Our thoughts are key to making this change but most of us struggle to think thoughts that are actually in our best interest.

When faced with people who struggled with negativity in their thoughts Norman Vincent Peele forced them to change their perceptions by suggesting worst case scenarios. He would say “I’m sorry to hear that your house burned to the ground” to which they would respond “My house is just fine”. Then he would say “And your wife/husband/child is sick, so sorry to hear about that too” to which they would respond “That’s not true”. Peele would then follow up with a few more expressions of condolence for things that were untrue until his clients would eventually ask where he was getting such inaccurate information. Peele’s response, “If none of those things are true then there is something in your life that is going well”. After such an exchange Peele’s clients would leave with a sense of relief and appreciation for things they had previously overlooked and taken for granted. Even if just for a moment, the sadness they were experiencing when they arrived would subside, not because their circumstances had changed but their perceptions had changed.

Try this on your own. I am a witness that it works tremendously well if you commit to it. The next time you are stressed about how you will pay your household bills instead be grateful that you have a home for which to pay bills. The next time gas prices increase find joy in the fact that you have a car to fuel. And when your spouse makes you upset be happy that he/she is healthy enough to do whatever was done. Does this mean you ignore your problems and issues as if they don’t exist? Of course not! You may have earned a tear or too or to be angry, upset, or hurt but, will you allow yourself to be that way forever? Happiness is a choice and you will only have it when you decide to have it.
Change your perception, Change your life
