Someone once told me that I act like I don’t have a care in the world. Another person told me that when he sees me I’m always smiling. Neither of them had any idea how long it has taken me to get to a place in my life where I have faith that everything will work out for my good. For many years I worried about EVERYTHING. I would think about every possible way that something could go wrong and prepare a plan for how I would handle each scenario and, in hindsight, I recognize that over 90% of those possible problems never happened. I’d like to tell you that I never worry about anything. I’d like to say that as I share with you advice and tips on how to change your thinking mine is perfectly positive all the time. But, the truth is simple, I still struggle with negative thinking, doubt, and worry just like you, even though I know better. There are still days when I have to will myself into operating with a smile and positive outlook on life. There are days when I look at where my life is now, compare it to where I wanted to be, and feel disappointment for the things I have not yet accomplished. The difference between me and many others is that I’ve learned the value allowing myself a few moments of despair then shaking it off, straightening up, and pressing on. Our thoughts and the words we speak have power and what we choose to spend our time contemplating on eventually comes to pass. So, instead of waking up and saying “this is going to be one of those days” wake up and say “this is a great day and I choose to be happy today”. It may be hard to do at first but if you keep at it every day eventually your life catches up with it the words you speak and you'll want to share the experience with others too.

While writing this post I saw that wonderful quote from Part 1 and couldn't pass up the chance to share it. I want to thank everyone who attended my first "official" speaking event yesterday. It was truly inspiring to see people share their talents and to hear their stories as we inspired, uplifted, and encouraged each other. I want to send a special thanks to Mrs. Clara Downing-Bain and the staff of North Carolina Recovery Support Services for all their hard work coordinating the event and for giving me the opportunity to share my message. THANK YOU! May your holiday be filled with peace, love, and positive thinking that will be passed on from generation to generation. Think Legacy. "Thinkers" are quotes that challenge your mind by giving new perspective. A good quote can inspire you, it can motivate you, and it can slap you in the face and make you get up and do something. Think on these words as you journey to legacy... "You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate." -Elizabeth Gilbert The holiday season is tough for many people as they are reminded of loved ones lost that they can’t visit or negative past experiences that they haven’t quite gotten over. If you are one of those people take a stand this year to create positive memories to replace those negative thoughts. It doesn’t have to be something major, a series a small positive thoughts have the power to replace negativity. Try starting some new traditions with your family for a start. Make a big deal out of decorating, build a gingerbread house or bake cookies together. Sit around by the fire in your PJs and watch Christmas movies while sipping hot chocolate. Better yet go volunteer so you can be reminded of how blessed you are despite your circumstances. Whatever you do, make the decision that this year will be different, this year will be joyful, this year will be positive and the start to a new legacy. Once upon a time there lived a man named Alfred. Alfred’s family was fairly well-off so Alfred and his brothers were able to go to schools all over the world, by age 17 Alfred was fluent in five different languages and was bound for success. As an adult Alfred gained success as an engineer, an author, a chemist, and an inventor. Alfred held patents on many inventions, over 300 in fact. We still use some of Alfred’s inventions even today like artificial silk and artificial leather. Alfred was very successful as an inventor. Many people during Alfred’s time were using explosives unsuccessfully, the explosives were so unpredictable. Alfred found a way to use explosives safely by designing his most famous invention: dynamite. Alfred gained fame and wealth from dynamite as it came into high demand around the world. People needed dynamite for construction, manufacturing, and even in war. Alfred became more and more famous but realized that he was lonely. Alfred had dated very little, was unmarried, and had no children so he set out to find a wife by placing a personal ad in the newspaper. Bertha became the love of his life but soon she realized she could not be with Alfred. Bertha was an advocate for peace, marching and speaking out against war. When Bertha realized that Alfred’s invention was being used in war to kill people she couldn’t bare to be with him, so she ended the relationship but they remained friends. One day Alfred picked up the newspaper and was shocked by what he read. Alfred saw an obituary...his obituary. One of Alfred’s brothers had died in an accident and the newspaper mistakenly believed it was Alfred. The headline read, “The Merchant of Death is dead” and the obituary told of how Alfred became rich finding ways to kill more people faster than ever. Alfred made a decision. That was not how he wanted to be remembered so he decided to change his legacy. Over the final years of Alfred’s life he crafted a plan to change his legacy...and he did! Upon his death Alfred left over 90% of his wealth to the founding of five prizes to honor people around the world in the areas of physics, literature, chemistry, physiology/medicine, and peace. Today, we know these prizes as Nobel prizes and the Alfred Nobel Peace Prize has honored people such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa, and our POTUS Barack Obama. Among one of the first recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize was Bertha von Suttner, Alfred’s former girlfriend. Why am I sharing this story? Because, like Alfred, YOU have the power to change your legacy. Don’t like your past? Create a new past, a new memory, just like Alfred. And you have an advantage that Alfred did not have, you are still alive! Alfred left his mark in his death becoming known for honoring people with great positive impact on the world instead of “The Merchant of Death”. Today is your chance to start your change so you actually get to see the positive impact of your life on others. Start today, start now! Think Legacy. An exhibit at the NC Museum of History teaches visitors about the history of North Carolina through the eyes of junior historians. Geared towards children, the exhibit has bright colors, lots of things to touch, and dioramas made by kids with everyday things you can find at home. Right in the middle of this kid-friendly history lesson is a very adult statement: “The past is every moment before this one”. How profound! Sometimes it takes looking through the eyes of a child to make something complicated seem so simple. “The past” holds so many of us back in so many ways that many often never recover from it. Past experiences are often the root of struggles with depression, alcohol and drug addiction, low self-esteem, and negative thinking but if we just recognize the value of each new moment we could move on. If we considered each unpleasant moment as the past and every present moment as a NEW past we could see that we have the power to recreate our history. Each moment you live is an opportunity to create a new past. So, when something happens that you don’t like, fix it in your mind to make the next moment better. And then the next moment, and the next moment, until your past becomes what you want it to be rather than what happened to you. Think Positive. Think Legacy.
